Threat by former student shuts down SPSCC Olympia campus for the week

South Puget Sound Community College announced that it was moving to virtual operations on Tuesday.

SPSCC stated in a press release that the move was made due to “direct threats” against the campus. The virtual operations will continue until May 17 and affect both Olympia and Lacey campuses.

“We take these threats seriously and are working closely with local law enforcement to support the safety of our entire campus community,” the release stated.

The JOLT reached Kelly Green, SPSCC’s executive communications officer, via email.  Green stated that the shutdown was due to a former student, who had threatened to harm him- or herself in late April.

“As we have worked to navigate that difficult situation with them, they became increasingly agitated and sent emails threatening individuals and our Olympia campus," Green stated, adding, "we take these threats seriously and the safety of our campus community is always our primary concern. We feel this is the best course of action we can take at the moment.”

Green referred all other questions on the matter to the Olympia Police Department; they were unable to provide any details.
