Temporary closure of Wheeler Avenue for Nickerson Encampment clearing on December 11-15

Posted

To address homelessness and ensure the safety and well-being of the community, Olympia has announced the temporary closure of Wheeler Avenue of both vehicle and foot traffic from Central Street to Eastside Street.

The closure will be in effect today December 11, with restricted access between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day until Friday, December 15.

The closure will facilitate the clearing of the Nickerson encampment, a collaborative initiative undertaken by the City’s Homeless Response Team in partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation, and transition individuals currently residing in the encampment to alternative shelter options.

Residents will still have access to Wheeler Avenue from Eastside Street during the closure, while those approaching from the Central Street side are encouraged to use Boulevard Road for entry and exit.

The initiative is aligned with the City's commitment to the One Community Plan, adopted in 2020 to comprehensively address homelessness and related challenges by focusing on housing, health, and safety needs.
