Tatsuya Endo created the popular manga series Spy x Family in 2019. Since its debut, it has become a worldwide phenomenon. Cloverworks and Wit Studio collaborated to bring the anime adaptation to life, which took worldwide popularity by storm. I saw the movie, and the art style impressed me. The film balances spy action with family comedy perfectly. I cannot help but want to watch the film again. Traditionally, anime films would be non-canon, which deviates from the source material’s story. However, I feel like the film truly connects the story with the manga. Code: White appears to be a canon story, yet it is also completely original. But some good things didn’t last long in theaters.

Similarly to the previous Crunchyroll films, “Spy x Family Code: White” will run for a limited theatrical window. Anime fans need to see it quickly. I apologize for the spoilers in this review. It’s time to start the mission.

Plot Summary

After receiving orders about a replacement in Operation "Strix," Loid decides to help Anya win a cooking competition at Eden Academy by making the principal's favorite dessert in order to prevent his replacement. The Forgers decide to travel to the region of origin of the meal. From there, they set off a chain of events that could potentially put world peace at risk. Will Loid be able to accomplish this task? How long will this pretend family stay together? Will the Forgers enjoy a happy family weekend?

Pros and Cons of the Film

The movie, set after the events of Spy x Family Season 2, has a lot of love to offer. I even enjoyed this film so much that I want to see it again. I would admit that it leans more toward comedy, but the action scenes kept me intrigued throughout the entire movie. Wit Studio’s combination of CGI with the fast-paced action has kept me excited, especially Yor’s fight scene in the airship. Even the rotating CGI background is a nice juxtaposition. It gives the scene a more dynamic effect. I also find the comedic parts enjoyable as well. Yet, I didn’t find any flaw worth noting in this film.

• Humor in the Film (SPOILERS)

I would say that this film is so funny that it puts a smile on my face. I find Anya’s mind-reading abilities rather funny when she’s reading Loid’s and Yor’s minds. I also find her spy misadventures with the dog to be adorable and hilarious. Throughout the entirety of the film, there wasn’t enough time for me to breathe in between the laughs. The movie blends spy action with comedy in the right proportions.

Final thoughts

Overall, I had a really good time watching the film. The characters are enjoyable to watch, especially the humorous moments. Although the story was a bit predictable, it’s still enjoyable. The film’s overall story kept me on the edge of my seat. The English dub is outstanding. Plus, Wit Studio’s animated approach might show promise for better films. It would also mark the traditional animated films’ return to theaters. I’ll be looking forward to more surprises from Crunchyroll.

I’m giving Spy x Family Code: White 9.5 out of 10 stars. I declare this film mission accomplished. I highly recommend seeing this film as soon as possible.
