After a summer break for the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC), South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) gears up for the return of NWAC competition this September. The college released on its website on Thursday, August 29 the schedule for fall athletics programs for the 2024-25 regular season.
The SPSCC Clippers will compete in four sports under the NWAC, fielding student-athletes for Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, and tournament Golf, and have prepared their participants in the off-season.
The Clipper Volleyball team made history last year by qualifying for the NWAC playoffs for the first time in program history. With spiking season resuming, the volleyball squad – led by long-time head coach Tusalava Kuaea – hopes to maintain momentum from last year’s feat and vie for a deeper tournament run this year. They will start their NWAC conference action on Wednesday, September 18, as they host Highline.
The Lady Clippers finished August pre-season tournaments and invitationals with a 4-3 record. They continue in the first half of September with five non-conference contests before getting into conference competition.
After the program’s maiden season last year, the Clipper Golf program is ready to roll for its sophomore year. Head Coach Russ Olsen has focused on recruitment in the men’s side and giving the women’s squad its first-ever complete team as they look to qualify for the NWAC Championships.
Golf season starts on September 20-21 for the women at Saint Martin’s University’s Grisham Memorial Shootout. The men tee up on September 25-27 at the Bishop Invitational, also at Saint Martin’s.
2023 NWAC West Region Coach of the Year awardee Maxwell Sampson has also been busy bolstering the Clipper Men’s Soccer roster, scouting talent from all around the country for a bigger chance of qualifying for the Championships this season.
The men’s soccer squad got off to a slow start in its pre-season August matches, dropping all six fixtures. They will start their regular season on Saturday, September 7, as they host Chemeketa.
Meanwhile, SPSCC alum and former player Lee Baker is excited to handle head coaching responsibilities for the Clipper Women’s Soccer program for the first time this season. He has been part of the SPSCC women’s soccer program staff since its inception in 2021.
The team picked up one win to four losses in its August exhibition and pre-season contests. The win came in the lone home fixture, 1-0 over Umpqua. The Lady Clippers will kick off their regular season away from home as they travel to Centralia on September 4.
