A sign waving rally to show support for Social Security and Social Security workers is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 9.
The rally, which is organized by Olympia Indivisible, will take place near the Social Security Administration office at 1009 College Ave. SE in Lacey. The public is invited to attend.
As part of the event, nonperishable food donations, such as canned goods, cereal, rice, beans, pasta and peanut butter, will be collected for the Thurston County Food Bank.
Olympia Indivisible is a volunteer pro-democracy group that was founded in 2017. It is one of hundreds of Indivisible chapters across the nation.

Social Security is NOT Welfare! This is an Insurance Program. If you look at your payroll stub, you will see a deduction for F.I.C.A., which stands for the Federal Insurance Contributions Act, the act of Congress that enabled the Social Security system in the late 1930s. People pay into this system from their first paycheck till their last. It's not "Cute," and it's not just "Boomers." Nearly 90% of people over age 65 receive Social Security; however, for most of them, it is not enough to live on.
While there is currently enough money in the Social Security trust fund to pay these people, severe cuts to the Social Security workforce (which was already understaffed) mean the department may not be able to send checks (or direct deposits) out on time. For those for whom Social Security is a major source of income, this could be disastrous. (Social Security data from 2015, released in 2024, showed that for beneficiaries age 65 and older, 39% of men and 44% of women receive 50% or more of their income from Social Security. For those
age 65 and older, 12% of men and 15% of women rely on Social Security for 90% or more of their income.)
