Sediment survey to create loud noise in Capitol Lake

Capitol Lake will undergo a survey of underwater sediment known as a bathymetric survey as part of the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Project.

Initially scheduled for November 2023, the survey was postponed due to seasonal underwater growth. The project was able to begin yesterday, February 26, and is expected to run through March 5.

Conducted by crews working both on and around Capitol Lake, as well as along Deschutes Parkway near the 5th Avenue Dam, the survey will provide information on the depth and shape of the underwater landscape, including sediment deposits.

Crews will also perform a geotechnical survey of the land near the 5th Avenue Dam, involving drilling into the ground to collect samples.

Visitors in the area can expect to see small, motored boats on Capitol Lake, as well as large machinery, trucks, and crews near the 5th Avenue Dam, which may result in loud noise from the drilling.

A portion of the pedestrian walking path will be closed for safety reasons, with pedestrians advised to follow the marked detour.

As part of the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Project, this survey will provide data on the initial phases of bridge, roadway, and boardwalk development.
