River Ridge High School (RRHS) unveiled its new student commons, student store and kitchen as part of a modernization project.
Phase 1 of the River Ridge High School modernization kicked off during the summer of 2022.
The opening of the commons on Jan. 6 is part of Phase 2, which started during the fall of 2023.
In an email to The JOLT, North Thurston Public School (NTPS) Executive Director of Communications Amy Blondin said the modernization is aligned with the schedule and funding.
“The River Ridge High School modernization is moving along on time and on budget. We were excited to open the new student commons, student store, and kitchen on Jan. 6 when staff and students returned from winter break,” Blondin said.
Blondin added that the school has also refreshed the gym, pool, weight room, tennis courts and baseball facilities.
“Next up, the new 70-classroom wing will open in the fall along with a beautiful new library,” Blondin said..
Blondin explained that the age of RRHS and available funding were considered in starting the project.
“River Ridge High School opened in 1993, so is now more than 30 years old," said Blondin. "This qualified it for some state matching funds that enabled us to access more than $29 million in state funding for the project."
Blondin added that the rest project is being paid for with money from a 2020 bond.
"We are grateful to our community for continuously supporting our schools,” Blondin commented.
The project website stated that the RRHS staff and the construction team aim to minimize disruption to the learning environment throughout the project, ensure student and staff safety, keep staff and families informed as work progresses, and ensure athletic teams and other activities have adequate alternative spaces.
Blondin said 17 portable classrooms were brought into where much of the classroom space is currently so that staff and students can focus on teaching and learning during the major modernization.
“At the end of this five-year project, we will enjoy a beautiful facility that meets the needs of our students and community now and into the future. We will have upgraded athletics facilities, classroom spaces, and a more cohesive and connected campus,” River Ridge’s website stated.
