Port of Olympia adopts resolution banning use of its properties for immigration enforcement operations

Posted

The Port of Olympia Commission unanimously adopted a resolution restricting the use of port properties and assets for civil immigration enforcement operations.

Passed during a commission meeting on Monday, April 27, Resolution 2026-04 bans the port from entering a lease, license or other agreements that would allow the use of port properties for immigration enforcement operations.

It also bars the port from providing funds, equipment or personnel to assist in immigration enforcement activities.

The policy does not apply should the port be legally compelled by a valid court order or other binding legal requirements.

Section three of the resolution outlines numerous other limitations. The resolution does not:

  • Prohibit federal officers from accessing areas in port properties open to the public
  • Allow the port to interfere with criminal law enforcement activities
  • Authorize or refuse actions that would violate the terms of a federal grant
  • Restrict communications and information sharing as mandated by federal law

Before the adoption of the resolution, commissioners had a brief discussion about the resolution, which was brought forward by Commissioner Sarah Montano.

Acknowledging the limitations of the policy, Chris Pierce-Wright, the port’s legal counsel, told the commission the policy only addresses the port’s action in its proprietary capacity.

“There are other areas, for instance, where there are (Federal Aviation Administration) obligations or grant obligations where there is less discretion,” Pierce-Wright said. “The language in this policy suggests that the port won't violate the limits of those existing obligations.”

Commissioner Joel Hansen asked if the language of the resolution tracks with similar policies from other jurisdictions.

Commissioner Krag Unsoeld responded that staff referred to Seattle’s resolution in developing the policy.

“It's trying to make it so that we are in cooperation and in collaboration with the neighboring jurisdictions,” Unsoeld said.

A copy of the resolution can be viewed here.

Sad. Some folks just don't understand why ICE is so important. It took our family 6 years of applying and reapplying in order to legally immigrate. Had to have: a sponsor, place to stay, job, and health insurance. The rules are the same today. And the wait was worth it.

The folks taking the short cuts have resulted in so much illegal immigration. I have volunteered for 3 organizations that help fight human trafficking - the number one cause is illegal immigration. Not to mention modern day slavery. Think about it, where do these folks (millions) work and live. Crime, drugs, murder, and more.

Common sense please. It does not help our country or our citizens to allow criminals into our country. And by the way, a few countries are sending us their criminals as it is so easy to get rid of them to here.

Honestyandrealityguy, really?Your dogma is so darn boring and constrictive, virtually single sided. This port loves to look good but rarely anything they do has any real teeth to it. But thank you commissioner for the feel good.

Honestyandrealityguy is spot on with their comments, boring as they may be to Boatyarddog. I couldn’t disagree more with this resolution by the Port commissioners.

HonestyandRealityGuy - they're going after established US citizens in the form of masked goon squads lacking warrants and haivng i5chy trigger fingers. Remember when the USA used to be collectively against that? We fought a world war over it, remember?

Dear SnakeCharmer. I’ve corrected your previous comments to tell the truth.

They're going after illegals and criminals who have invaded our country. They wear masks because in places like Minnesota and Washington, the state and local governments allow violent protesters to target brave and courageous law enforcement officers and their families. There is no doubt that some mistakes have occurred, but the people involved are being held accountable. Remember when the USA collectively supported law enforcement instead of attacking and defunding them? We used to be against that? We fought a war to rid the world of Hitler and his extermination of the Jews, remember?

Thank you TheVirtualOne, finally someone that makes some sense...

Snake Charmer you are so far from the reality of the situation, I cannot blame any of the law enforcement for wearing a mask. It would be someone like you and Antifa that would target them & their families when all they are doing is there job to protect us.

Boatyarddog - You have quite the imagination. There are zero negative remarks about “9 year olds and infants” or anything else even close to that which could be interpreted as racism. What I and many others have said is that immigrants are welcome as long as they go through the process of doing so legally. That’s how we insure those who have only the best interests of our country are allowed to become citizens, rooting out any with bad intentions. A great example exemplifying that would be our new Secretary of the Navy, Hung Cao, who arrived here from Vietnam as a child. Look at the wonderful example he is to other immigrants.

What do you think those I Mentioned were doing? GOING thru the Process of becoming US citizens. It Takes A Long time, and money. The 9 year old missed school, was separated from his Parents, and I'm sure suffered Mental Trauma because of it. During other MORE Democratic Administrations these were known as Protected Foreign Nationals.... not reclassified as Illegal Immigrants. And HERE LEGALLY until the DHS, under bone spurs Signed An Executive Order to begin the Purge... VERY MUCH LIKE THE HITLER you mentioned. YOU ARE AN FOOL TO embrace any other Concept of the reasoning. YOU DO NOT SPEAK for THIS American Citizen, or any others. YOU merely throw Lies around and see where it sticks... like a Toddler, and Trump. Prove your Lies.... or Shut the Hell Up. There is NOTHING with Virtue in your Lying about those you don't know.
