‘Peace, Love and Revolution’: June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Thurston County

To recognize the efforts of those who have fought for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Thurston Board of County Commissioners formally proclaimed the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the county during the public meeting on Tuesday, June 6.

The board said the proclamation urges Thurston residents to recognize the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and to “actively promote the principles of equality, liberty, and justice.”

“Thurston County is strengthened by and thrives upon the rich diversity of ethnic, cultural, racial, gender and sexual identities of its residents; all of which contribute to the vibrant character of our county,” the proclamation read.

Community members from the local organization PFLAG, formerly an abbreviation for Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc., Olympia, attended the meeting to receive the proclamation.

“This is a particularly important year for pride and for LGBTQ folks,” said Lucas Miller, a member of the Board of PFLAG Olympia. “Around 400 bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country, especially targeting [the] transgender community, trying to deny transgender people everything from health care to bathroom access. So this year, it is more important than ever, that bodies such as this stand up in support of our transgender friends and neighbors.”

“Speak on behalf of our community,” Miller added.

Miller invited community members to attend the Pride March in downtown Olympia on July 1 and the first-ever Pride celebration in the City of Yelm on June 10.

This year’s Pride Month’s theme, “Peace, Love, and Revolution,” aims to recognize the efforts of those who have fought for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

June is designated as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

Why do our taxes pay for crosswalks painted as the transgender flag? I don't remember that on any ballot.

Revolution is never peaceful or engaged in with love. This motto is a contradiction in terms.
