October is Disability Inclusion Month at Olympia School District, the Board of Directors proclaimed at a meeting on Thursday, Sept. 24.
The proclamation stems from the school district’s recognition that students with disabilities are valued members of their communities and bring important perspectives to educational spaces.
The proclamation states,“Whereas ... students with disabilities deserve equitable opportunities to participate fully in academics, electives, extracurricular activities, graduation pathways, employment preparation, and all aspects of school life,” the proclamation states.
The proclamation also states creating inclusive educational environments also benefits school communities as it fosters belonging, understanding, and meaningful participation.
The proclamation encourages students, families, educators, staff and community members to promote accessibility, inclusion, disability justice, and equitable opportunities for students with disabilities.
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction also acknowledges October as Disability History and Awareness Month pursuant to RCW (Revised Code of Washington) 28A.230.158.

As someone old enough to remember when those with physical or mental disabilities were formerly excluded from even attending public schools, what a wonderful time we live in that includes all. And a big cheer for those teachers and aids who make inclusion possible, not forgetting students who daily show empathy and support for their fellow students.
