Olympia School District (OSD) Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance Jennifer Priddy presented the 2023-2024 Administration Budget Proposal for its first reading last  Thursday, June 8, during a Regular Board Meeting.

The district plans to spend $230,627,029 for the 2023-2024 school year. Included are these major budgets:

  • $176,902,565 will be allocated for general operations
  • $32,069,933 for capital projects
  • $1,500,000 for Transportation Vehicles
  • $18,496,573 for Debt Service
  • $1,657,958 for Associated Student Body Fund.

“A big component of our resources this coming year has to do with House Bill 1436, enacted by the Legislature [and] is driving $2.7 million dollars in additional resources for the upcoming school year,” Priddy said.

The district will also receive an additional $1.3 million due to the change in the funding cap.

“One aspect of the improved funding has to do with the threshold that you must hit in order to qualify for safety net funds. That threshold is a little bit lower. We will qualify for more funding, but we are not able to calculate that at this point,” Priddy added.

Public invited to attend the public hearing and community forum

On June 14, at 5 p.m., the district is scheduled to hold a public hearing at which the board will explain House Bill 1436. This meeting will be available both in-person and live-streamed at 5 p.m.; the community forum, to be online over Zoom is set to start at 6 p.m. to accept comments about the proposal. “On the 14th, we'll have a much shorter presentation [public hearing]. And also we do have time before the Community Forum. At 6 o'clock is when we anticipated the public would want to engage,” Priddy said. “The public forum is like the ones that we did for our education reduction plan right where they are able to type in questions, and we'll be able to answer those.”

The proposal is scheduled to be presented to the board for its second reading and approval on June 22.

If there are no amendments, the OSD directors and superintendent will sign the Budget Adoption Resolution No. 649, which contains the fund appropriations, during the second reading on June 22.
