To encourage the safety and health of children, the Olympia School District Board of Directors proclaimed October as Walk to School Month.
A proclamation states that walking or biking to school offers an opportunity to build activity into a child’s daily routine, improving health and increasing readiness to learn in the classroom.
School board members took turns reading from the proclamation at a meeting on Sept. 10.
“A lack of physical activity plays a leading role in rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other health problems among children,” the proclamation states.
To increase awareness about the benefits of walking and biking to school, Walk to School events will be held around the world, the proclamation states.
“Families, school employees and community leaders can make a lasting impression among our community's youth by modeling fun, safe and healthy behavior by accompanying students on Walk to School events,” the proclamation states.
Present at the meeting were board members Jess Tourtellotte-Palumbo, Maria Flores, Renee Fullerton, Hilary Seidel and Gilbert Lamont. Student representatives Claire Hartzell, Malachi Cardona and Juniper Hummel-Church also attended the meeting.
