Mortar training to be conducted July 24-28

Posted

Expect day and night mortar training to generate loud noises July 24 at 8 p.m. to July 28 at 11:59 p.m. from the Joint Base Lewis-Mcchord Base (JBLM).

“Live munitions are fired into the artillery impact area on JBLM Main. Noise from this training is frequently heard in the surrounding communities, especially those closest to the impact area,” the JBLM website stated.

Questions and comments can be directed to JBLM’s Public Affairs on the website.

The picture shows a howitzer. It's possibly the newest type, the M777.

It must be towed by a vehicle. It has an effective range of about 15 miles and fires artillery shells.

A M224 Mortar is a smooth bore tube that sits upon a base plate and is supported by a tripod. It is carried by a human. It fires what are called 'bombs'..basically small, finned shells, with an effective range (depending on the type of shell) of up to 3800 yds.
