A man is in custody following a deadly road rage incident that occurred Saturday night in the area of Monique Court SE and Holmes Island Road SE in north Olympia.
Shortly after 9 p.m. on May 10, deputies with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) responded to reports of an alleged confrontation between two vehicles.
Authorities say one vehicle, which was carrying children, was repeatedly struck by another. Both vehicles came to a stop, and the driver of the struck vehicle suffered a medical emergency.
"The victim experienced a medical emergency while the suspect reportedly laughed at them and fled the scene," TCSO Sheriff Derek Sanders stated in his social media.
First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lacey Police Department personnel later located the suspect's vehicle, which showed signs of damage consistent with the reported collision.
The suspect, identified as 54-year old Robert Barry Leland, was caught and found to be exhibiting signs of intoxication.
He was then arrested. He is facing multiple charges, including first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence, and hit-and-run. The suspect was identified through arrest records.
Detectives have obtained warrants for evidence from both the vehicle and a blood sample from the suspect.
