Local farmers’ group offers classes on ‘foodscaping’

Posted

Food Prosperity Central (FPC), a farmers’ organization based in Lewis County and Yelm, is offering lectures on neighborhood gardening Wednesday, June 1, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Yelm Community Center.

Called the Yelm Food Sovereignty Project, the group envisions a concept called “foodscaping,” where each home has a vegetable garden and fruit trees, with neighbors coordinating what crops they should grow and trading them with each other.

According to FPC the event offers “grassroots conversations to strengthen our Yelm local FOOD system and building a plan together to achieve it.”

Topics and speakers during the event include:

  • SEED SAVING - Margaret Gilbride
  • GARDENING & FARMING - Mari Mankamyer and Tim Mann
  • PRESERVING THE HARVEST - Susie Kyle
  • HOW TO START A NEIGHBORHOOD GROUP - Marian Clements

Founded by Lewis County potato farmer Susie Kyle, FPC focuses on promoting food prosperity and bringing the community together “in a true grassroots way.”

“We hope to increase the availability (and affordability) of local healthy food, increase local food production whether it be a back-yard garden or farm, and stimulate the production of locally made value-added food products,” the group described itself on its website.

Interested community members can learn more on the group’s website or at The JOLT calendar.
