Lacey seeks guidance on its draft six-part program to deal with homelessness

Survey runs from now until Mon., Dec. 20

Posted

The City of Lacey is responding to poverty and homelessness in several ways and, for the next 10 days, seeks public comment on how to prioritize future activities.

There are eight topic areas about which the city seeks comment, including: Shelter, Housing, Support Services, Prevention & Early Intervention, Collaboration, Information, Community Impact Mitigation and Draft Plan Overview.

Lacey notes that most homeless encampments in the city are located on state lands, such as Dept. of Transportation rights-of-way and the Dept. of Ecology campus. The city arranged with these agencies to "assume enforcement authority so these areas could be cleaned," according to its website, and began this work in October 2020.

How to Participate

The city has set up a special virtual open house website from which to solicit comments.  It is set up to mimic an in-person event.  From the site: "Comments pile up on poster boards for all visitors to see and add to – of course, some people will stop by only to learn and not leave comments, which is a good thing too.'

To participate, visit the special webpage introducing the survey.

This post is long and involved, but I highly recommend taking some time to see the work that has gone into it. Kudos to the City of Lacey. I don't live in the City, but it is worth thinking about all these approaches and insights in order to fully appreciate the scope of work and effort.

Thanks to JOLT for publishing this.
