Lacey council grows parks commission to seven plus one

During its regular council meeting yesterday, the Lacey City Council unanimously approved Ordinance 1601 which adds two members to the city’s Board of Park Commissioners.

Parks, Culture, and Recreation Director Jen Burbidge introduced the ordinance that increases the number of general board membership from five to seven. Burbidge explained that as the city continues to grow, the board would need more community representation and diversity for the development of the city’s recreational facilities and program.

In total, the board will have eight members consisting of seven general members and a youth representative. Based on the ordinance, at least five members of the commission would come from the city of Lacey, while the remaining two may either be city or Urban Growth Area residents.

In the discussion, Councilmember Michael Steadman asked whether the board considered extending the term for its commissioners. Burbidge responded that the issue was not brought up and that the term remains at three years.
