On the night of March 28, Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the Lacey area.

Authorities discovered that a man inside the vehicle was violating a protection order and resisted arrest, according to TCSO’s news release.

The man barricaded himself in the vehicle, brandishing a knife and expressing his resistance to arrest at any cost.

TCSO coordinated with the Olympia Police Department's K9 unit and a mental health co-responder to manage the crisis, while Lacey Police Department officers closed the perimeter to prevent bystanders from getting involved. A TSCO Sergeant trained in crisis negotiation also attempted to negotiate with the man in his vehicle.

“Pepper spray and pepper balls were deployed in the car with no success,” TCSO reported.

The suspect emerged from the vehicle armed with a knife and started walking towards the authorities.

“Less lethal munitions were deployed as an alternative to deadly force. The suspect retreated back in his car”, TCSO added.

A SWAT activation was requested after, leading to the arrival of an armored Bearcat vehicle. After its arrival, the suspect surrendered without further incident.

The suspect, arrested for multiple offenses, including violating a domestic violence order, was brought into custody.
