Authorities have identified the man who was shot dead by police after hijacking a truck on I-5, later charging at officers while wielding a knife.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office said the subject had been identified as Neil A Costin, a 32-year-old man from British Columbia.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Thurston County Coroner's Office identified Costin through fingerprints and photos from the U.S. Border Patrol.

On November 18, Costin allegedly hijacked and crashed a semi-truck on I-5 at Exit 109. After about two hours of refusing to cooperate with authorities, Costin was shot by Washington State Patrol when he charged at officers while holding a knife. He died on the scene.

The offices of the Lewis and Mason County sheriffs are leading the investigation. The Thurston County Coroner's Office has also contacted authorities in British Columbia.

People with information about the incident were urged to call Lead Detective Tyson Brown with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 360-740-1326 or through Tyson.Brown@lewiscountywa.gov.
