Herschel Gene Spurlock passed away on July 22, 2026, in Lacey, Washington, after battling angio sarcoma cancer.
He was born on June 27, 1938, in Hardy, Arkansas, and lived a life marked by hard work, determination, and deep devotion to the people and pursuits he loved.
Herschel’s life was shaped by resilience from an early age. He attended school through part of the 12th grade, and at 17, he was involved in a serious accident that kept him from being accepted into the military. Even so, he built a life defined by perseverance and a willingness to work with his hands and heart.
Over the years, he took on many roles, each reflecting his strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. He worked as a cotton picker driver, became a masonry contractor, owned a Honda motorcycle shop, and operated two 18-wheelers while driving in the Bay Area of California.
Later, he started Spurlock’s Mobile Lube business, and then built a lawn mowing business that he continued from 2003 until 2025. He retired hoping to return to the work he enjoyed, but terminal cancer changed those plans, and he went to live with Jesus in Heaven.
He found joy in motorcycles and absolutely loved racing scrambles, hare and hound, and motocross. Those passions were part of the energy and enthusiasm he brought to life. Herschel was also a member of Olympia Bible Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of who he was.
Above all, Herschel will be remembered as a family man whose life touched generations. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Spurlock, their daughter Jeanna Camp and her husband Dr. David Camp. He also leaves his brother, Radford Spurlock and his wife Telie Spurlock, and his sister, Gail Sterling.
His love continues through his grandchildren, Danielle and Greg Corbin, and David Allen Camp II, and through his great-grandchildren, McKenna, Harper, Addelynd, Weston, and Evelyn, with another great-grandchild on the way. The love of family was one of the enduring blessings of his life, and his memory will remain treasured by all who knew him and called him their own.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mel and Katie Spurlock, by his brother, Basil Spurlock, his brother-in-law Ralph Sterling and great grandchildren Finley and Kyrie.
Herschel Gene Spurlock will be remembered for his strength, his tireless spirit, his faith, and the love he carried for his family. May his memory bring comfort and may the life he lived continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
