Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday, June 3, during a dog training session at an undisclosed location in Thurston County.
The incident left one man dead and another individual in custody.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) deputies were called to the scene on the afternoon of June 3 following reports of a shooting incident. Upon arrival, emergency responders pronounced the victim dead. He was identified as Lewis County resident in his early 20s.
According to a TCSO police report, the shooting happened during a training exercise involving multiple people and the use of firearms as part of a video recording.
Authorities said one of the participants, a dog trainer, discharged a firearm that was loaded with live ammunition, hitting the victim.
Detectives launched an investigation that included witness interviews and evidence collection at the scene of the incident.
The dog trainer, whose name was not released, was later arrested for first-degree manslaughter and booked into Thurston County Corrections Facility.
“Our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. The emotional toll on everyone involved is significant, and we recognize the deep pain caused by this loss,” the TCSO said in a statement.
