The Lacey Police Department is searching for a male suspect who allegedly stole a car with a 7-month-old baby onboard.

Lacey police said in a news release that officers were dispatched to an auto theft at the 76 gas station on the 100 block of College Street SE on Sunday night, June 26.

Initially, authorities were advised that a man had his silver 2000 Honda Accord stolen from him with his baby inside. The man attempted to chase down the suspect with the help of another driver who gave him a ride.

Lacey police said “officers began to saturate the area with units from every law enforcement agency in Thurston County.”

Shortly after, a witness reported locating the missing vehicle on the Karen Frasier Woodland Trail.

The witness said a man exited the car and said something about stealing it. After the suspect was confronted by the witness, he threw the key into the vehicle and fled on foot into the trail.  Police said a K9 track yielded negative results.

The baby was found unharmed and asleep inside the car. Both the vehicle and the infant were returned to the “extremely grateful father,” Lacey police said.

An image of the suspect shows him wearing a black beanie, a camouflage jacket with a Nike logo, grayish pants, and gray shoes.

Police said there is probable cause to arrest the man for theft of a motor vehicle and second-degree kidnapping.

Those with information about the suspect are urged to call 360-459-4333 or CrimeStoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
