Director of Career & College Readiness Paula Perryman reported the success of Olympia School District (OSD)’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) during a regular board meeting yesterday, July 14.
According to the OSD website, Washington’s CTE programs offer “students an opportunity to graduate from high school with career goals, job skills, and leadership skills, knowing where to go to further their career or academic goals.”
Perryman discussed that the district successfully established Construction Trades, Stagecraft II, CTE Health, and Increased Dual Credit Articulations for the 2022-2023 school year.
Perryman also shared the future goals of CTE, stating that they will continue to expand professional development, ensuring the district aligns itself with industry standards.
“We're going to expand some work-based learning. We're going to get everybody to reconnect to some partnerships we've previously had with the state of Washington or Oregon,” Perryman said.
CTE implementers also built frameworks around how schools can integrate mathematics and technology into an art program.
“Our goal next year is commercial art, coming to middle school level through STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics]. We are going to be covering AWS cloud computing, where kids can earn industry-recognized credentials through Amazon Web Services (AWS), which will help them get a job at Amazon if they so choose,” Perryman shared with the board.
“We are adding medical terminology to our health sciences. Again, we are going to continue to increase those articulations, and we will be adding college into high school personal finance,” Perryman added.
