Annual Tumwater Dog Days to return at Pioneer Park on June 14

Posted

The City of Tumwater is hosting the 3rd annual Tumwater Dog Days this summer at Pioneer Park on June 14.

Event highlights include the newly added Dog Costume and Dog-Owner Look-alike contests. Only 20 spots are available for each contest, with an application deadline of June 12.

The first 100 dogs will be able to get a free vaccine from the Rabies Vaccine Clinic, provided by Deschutes Animal Clinic and sponsored by Toyota of Olympia.

The event will also feature the TwinStar Trails ‘n’ Tails Loop with treat stops, pup play zones, demonstrations from Puget Hounds Fly Ball, Thurston County Muttz-K-Teers Dog 4-H Club, and the Tumwater Police Department K-9.

“Dog Days celebrates the companionship between humans and our furry friends. They are our protectors, service providers, and companions — and we’ve set aside a day just for them!” the city said in a news release about the event.

If the weather permits, TwinStar's own Dollar Dog mascot will also drop by the event.

Fur parents can also have their pet’s photo taken, a caricature drawn, or have their face painted with a dog-themed design.

Attendees may visit various community booths and grab a beverage or bite to eat from one of the five on-site food vendors.

Food vendors include Stacks Burgers, Baby Dream Dogs, Steve's Wicked Kettle Korn, Boogie Beans Coffee and Sweetlee's Ice Cream.

The event is done through the partnership of the City of Tumwater Parks and Recreation Department with presenting sponsor TwinStar Credit Union, event sponsor Eric Zabala State Farm Agency, and vaccine sponsor Toyota of Olympia.

Safety guidelines

The city released safety guidelines that pet owners should take note of before attending the event.

Dogs should be on a maximum of a 5- to 6-foot leash. Longer or retractable leashes are not allowed.

Owners are also requested to keep their dogs close and give other dogs plenty of space, and to always ask first before doing a short dog-dog meet and greet.

Bringing treats to reward the dogs is also encouraged, as much as cleaning up after them.  Giving dogs a break is also encouraged if they are starting to feel overwhelmed.

Other guidelines can be read on the “safety guidelines” tab of the event website.
