$3.5M contract authorized for construction of roundabout in Tumwater

The Tumwater City Council authorized Mayor Debbie Sullivan to award a contract with Active Construction Inc. for the construction of a peanut-shaped roundabout at Linwood and 2nd avenues.

The $3.5 million contract was approved during a city council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

The construction of the roundabout aims to address the complex configuration of the intersection, which is stop-controlled and includes angled, multi-lane approaches, making it confusing for drivers, according to documents prepared for the meeting.

The contract calls for the construction of pedestrian and bicycle improvements along 2nd Avenue from Linwood Avenue to B Street. The upgrades include sidewalk ramps, sidewalk replacements, curb extensions, roadway resurfacing, restriping and stormwater improvements.

The city received 12 bids for the project. Active Construction’s bid was the lowest, coming in below the city engineer’s estimate of $4 million.

Funding for the project comes from the Washington State Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program, revenue from the city’s Transportation Benefit District, impact fees collected from private developments and the city’s Transportation Capital Facility Plan Fund.

City Engineer Ryan Blaser said at a Tumwater Public Works Committee meeting in August that construction could begin at the end of the year. The work would require the closure of the intersection for at least two months.

This is an important safety project. I hope that the peanut design results in adequate deflection to slow vehicles entering the roundabout.

I use this route to get to Fred Meyer and Costco, and it will be nice to have the four-way stop converted to a smoother and more efficient roundabout.
