A student at Washington Middle School, Iila Kennelly, recently had the opportunity to serve as a page in the Washington State House of Representatives.
Sponsored by State Representative Beth Doglio (D-Olympia), Kennelly, who hails from Olympia, has various responsibilities during her term as a page. She served last week in the Washington State House of Representatives.
State Rep. Beth Doglio (D-Olympia) sponsored Kennelly, a child of Lindsey Kennelly and Matthew Kennelly of Olympia.
The House Page Program offers youths aged between 14 and 17 a hands-on experience in the legislative process.
Pages like Kennelly hold different roles, such as presenting flags, distributing amendments on the House floor, and supporting the Legislature's operation.
Beyond their duties, pages receive daily civics instruction, craft bills, and participate in simulated committee hearings.
The program opens applications on November 1st of each year and provides opportunities during the legislative session, typically from January 8 to March 4.
Youths interested in participating can select the weeks they are available to work.
Located on the Capitol Campus in Olympia, the program offers a stipend of $65 per day and the chance to earn up to 20 hours of community service.
To qualify, participants must have parental consent, teacher and principal recommendations, and meet age requirements.
While the House receives numerous applications annually, there are limited openings, allowing each participant to serve only once in either the Senate or the House of Representatives.
For those interested in the program, further information is available through the Washington State Legislature website or this video.
Correction: A previous version of this story misspelled Iila's first name. We regret the error.
