Tumwater city officials to talk over Regional Housing Council

Posted

TUMWATER –– The Tumwater City Council is meeting in a 7 p.m. meeting Sept. 1 to discuss the Regional Housing Council, which is an interlocal council formed by the city governments of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater, as well as Thurston County, to find solutions to the area’s homelessness and housing affordability crisis.

The agreement between the three cities and Thurston County stipulates that the Health & Human Services Council will be dissolved, as well as the Community Investment Partnership, and the cost of rolling out programs and services related to housing and homelessness response will be shared between the three cities and the county. Resources previously designated to the Health & Human Services Council will be transferred to the Regional Housing Council once each of the four local governments approves the effort.

If approved, members of the Regional Housing Council would find ways to fund new housing efforts and how to coordinate existing resources in the community. Some funding sources for the council’s efforts could include money from the Home Investment Partnership Program, Consolidated Homeless Grant, Housing and Essential Needs and Community Development Block Grants, among other sources.

I'm optimistic about the possibility of home ownership for low and moderate income people via the Thurston Housing Land Trust - which is now up and running with Bylaws and 501 (c)3 status and able to take donations of housing property.
