During the Tumwater City Council meeting on Tue., Nov. 16, the council announced plans to conduct a public hearing, and possibly issue a decision on the proposed development of the New Market Industrial Campus, on Tue., Nov. 30.

The city council will deliberate whether to approve a development agreement between Tumwater and the Port of Olympia. The agreement provides the key terms of the lease to allow Panattoni, a California-based real-estate company to develop 199-acres of Port property.

Tumwater resident Walter Jorgensen expressed his concern over rumors that the council might immediately issue a decision following the public hearing. “It sounded to me that it might be a stretch to prepare for the hearing that quickly, let alone a decision process,” the resident said.

Tumwater City Manager John Doan clarified that it will still depend on the city council whether they would like to issue an immediate vote. Doan noted that the staff still needs to prepare the necessary documents for adoption and before making the Nov. 30 date official. “It just has to be readily adopted at the point at which we conduct the public hearing.”

In response, Tumwater Mayor Pete Kmet also assured residents by saying, “again, there is no requirement for a decision that night. We could easily postpone it to the following week if we want.”
