Thurston County Public Health and Social Services confirmed that the toxic algae advisory on Lake Lawrence has been lifted.

On Monday, the county assured residents that it is now safe to resume water activities in the lake. The Public Health and Social services confirmed that results from two weeks of consecutive testing showed that the algae bloom is now under control. The news came as a welcome relief since the Lake has become a popular boating and fishing area.

Previously, the county cautioned residents to stay away from the lake after high levels of microcystin, a type of liver toxin, was found in the waterbody. Officials even noted that the microcystin level was at twice the recommended amount.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Microcystin is considered as a possible human carcinogen. Exposure to this type of algae bloom may vary from mild rashes to kidney failure and in some instances, may also lead to death.
