During the Thurston County Board of Health Meeting on Tue., Oct. 12, Thurston County Health Officer Dr. Dimyana Abdelmalek reported that COVID-19 cases have declined.

“Cases are trending down here in Thurston County,” Abdelmalek said. She listed that there have been 567 cases of COVID-19 in the past week compared to 692 cases a week before. “This is a significant improvement,” the health officer shared.

Abdelmalek noted that according to the Washington State Department of Health sequencing, 99 percent of the reported cases were attributed to the Delta variant. As of Thur., Oct. 14, there are 137 new confirmed cases and a total of 206 COVID-19 related deaths.

In addition, the number of vaccinated people here continues to increase. She shared that over 178,000 residents or 61.2 percent of the county’s population have initiated a COVID-19 vaccine. Moreover, 164,000 or 56 percent of county residents have been fully vaccinated.

“We are hopeful,” she said. She also reminded residents to wear their masks, observe social distancing guidelines, and avoid large crowds especially as the weather continues to change. The health officials also urged individuals to stay at home when they are sick and to make sure that they get tested.

“We are definitely moving in the right direction,” Abdelmalek concluded.
