Stranger attacked without provocation

Police describe the incident as “completely unprovoked and extremely violent”

A man allegedly robbed and beat a stranger, using  a bicycle front fork as a weapon, at the Artesian Well Commons in downtown Olympia just after midnight on Monday, July 26.

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video. The video allegedly shows Trevor Levi Bartley, 25, as he walked up to the 51-year-old male who was seated on a park bench using his cell phone and kicked the man in the chest. Bartley then hit the victim with his lefthand, then picked up a “heavy metal” bicycle front fork. The video shows Bartleyclubbed the victim “at least four or more times” in the head with the bicycle assembly before he fell to the ground.

While the victim was on the ground, bleeding from his head, Bartley allegedly hit the victim again while the victim’s hands were up. Bartley then took the bike fork and clubbed the victim in the back of the head “at least twice” again while the victim was down on the ground, according to the victim’s statement to the police.

Bartley then allegedly stole several item from the victim, including a cell phone and charger and flashlight, then ran away.

While Olympia police were investigating the assault and contacting the victim, Bartley returned to the scene, standing across the street from the Artesian Well Commons.

Police arrested Bartley based on probable cause and the victim’s description.

Bartley was booked into the Thurston Jail for robbery in the first degree and assault in the first degree with a deadly weapon, both felonies.
