Powerhouse skincare tips for seniors

Hoe long does it take you to get ready to go somewhere these days?

For many, many, years, I envied the women who got up, dressed, washed their face, brushed their teeth, ran a comb (or their fingers) through their hair and out the door they went.

Not the story of my life. Time-consuming make-up and hairdos were standard tasks, along with certain fads from time to time, like false eyelashes, highlighted hair and nail colors that matched my outfit.

Eventually, I became so desperate to save some “sleep time” I had my eyebrows tattooed so I could skip that step.

Then came retirement…and little by little all the “extras” went away…until I became the one that could run out the door five minutes after I woke up. That is, until Bobbie Thompson Schoss entered my life. Bobbie took one look at me and announced,” your skin is too dry. I can help you change that.”

Bobbie is a powerhouse. She sits on several local boards, including Project New Hope and the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs. Gardening is her favorite pastime, next to helping women retain a healthy beauty routine.

Her background was in design and décor before she retired. But she became restless after a while and at the age of 70, discovered Mary Kay Skin Care Products. She did some research and was delighted to find they were environmentally conscious.

Through the Mary Kay “Pink Doing Green” pledge, they have planted one million trees around the world. They boast a worldwide recycling commitment with global manufacturing facilities that demonstrate sustainable processes every day through robust recycling programs, using only sustainable product packaging. They have Zero Landfill Sites, 100% bio-degradable packing materials and 100% renewable energy to power their world headquarters and manufacturing facilities.

Last but not least – no animal testing is involved with their products.  With her love for the environment and animals, she was sold.

She set out to learn everything she could about skincare, becoming one of Mary Kay’s Advances Skincare and Color Consultant. Seven years later, she is a Mary Kay Ambassador and one of their top salespersons.

Mature skin became especially interesting to Bobbie because of her age and the age of her friends. But she stressed it is important to start young!

Other tips she shared were “eyebrows frame the face so don’t ignore them. Too much makeup can look dark or heavy,” she advises.

Further, Bobbie says “I want people to see a beautiful woman, not a great makeup job.  Mature women should always use a light touch and stay away from powder, which can dry your skin.”

Skincare routines, I learned, can help, timewise. If you come home after errands, shopping or events and you're tired, cleanse and moisturize your face then – don’t wait until bedtime when you are even more tired.

Moisturizing is a must daily and sunscreen is just as important – even on cloudy or overcast days.

And these age-reducing tips are not just for women. Mary Kay offers a line of skin care for men as well.
