Olympia, Tumwater, Lacey plan for winter driving and snowplowing

Residents and motorists of Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater are advised to be aware of their cities’ snow plow routes, winter plans and measures.

On their respective websites, the three cities reveal their plans when snow falls and the road-clearing operations that follow.

Olympia advised that its snow crews switch to 24-hour operations when heavy snowfall is expected and that snow plows are deployed according to levels of priority, with street cleaners deployed when the snow is gone.

The city also added that while the plows are limited to servicing main roads and thoroughfares, homeowners’ associations (HOA) may secure a permit with the city online to plow snow on streets within their boundaries.

Residents are advised to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice before and when the plows are deployed.

“Clearing snow from sidewalks is the responsibility of the property owner. Please clear sidewalks as soon as you can safely do so,” Olympia pointed out.

“As the winter weather clears and people begin to venture out, please be mindful of your surroundings, it added. “Motorists, please watch out for pedestrians, and pedestrians please watch for motorists.”

Lacey pointed out that it attends to priority routes first, then proceeds to secondary routes to provide access to transit, schools and commuters. However, when snowfall is continuous, priority routes may need repeating plowing, with secondary routes’ plows becoming delayed.

“Please keep in mind, the city does not have the resources to plow neighborhood streets. However, Homeowners Associations (HOAs) can contact Lacey Public Works at (360) 491-5600 for information about our HOA Snow Plowing Policy,” said the city.

Tumwater’s website has a snow plow tracker showing the city’s snow plow routes and a separate webpage for tips for driving in the snow
