A transient Olympia man was arrested after he allegedly stole a basket full of merchandise from a store and threatened to harm a manager who confronted him.

According to Olympia police, Jason D Phillips, 47, was arrested on Feb. 15 after a reported robbery at the Dollar Tree on Harrison Avenue.

The manager told police that Phillips entered the store, filled a basket with merchandise including medicine, and walked out, past the cash register.

An employee alerted the manager, who confronted Phillips outside the store and attempted to grab the basket.

The manager said Phillips quickly turned toward him, took out a hammer from under his jacket and held it up over his head while yelling, “Come get some” and “I’ll bash your f*cking skull in.”

The manager said he retreated from the suspect and called law enforcement.

Officers located Phillips near Party City and detained him without incident.

The suspect was booked at the Thurston County Jail for second-degree robbery.

An officer went to an area in the woods where Phillips had been staying and found a red hammer as well as a green Dollar Tree handbasket full of clothing and new medicine containers.
