Olympia, county seek feedback on housing programs

Posted

Olympia and Thurston County are asking community members to provide feedback on two housing-related programs that “help guide the focus of local housing efforts.”

Fair Housing Assessment

First is the Fair Housing Assessment, conducted by Thurston County, the Housing Authority of Thurston County and Olympia, meant to discover barriers to housing access such as housing discrimination and its effects on county and Olympia residents.

Residents can download a draft of the document and find resources about federal and state fair-housing laws on the Engage Olympia website.

Consolidated Needs Assessment

Olympia and the county are also asking for feedback on its Consolidated Plan Needs Assessment and Housing Market Summary, which determines how funds will be used to support housing, suitable living environments and economic opportunities for people with low or moderate incomes.

“The assessment and summary would be used to inform the Consolidated Plan,” the city explained in a press release, “and help prioritize the use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to support affordable housing, economic development, public facilities improvements, public services and urgent needs.”

To comment, go to the CDBG website, download a draft of the summary and comment on the document.

“Comments on these efforts may be emailed to cdbg@ci.olympia.wa.us; mailed to City Hall at P.O. Box 1967, Olympia WA 98507-1967; dropped off at City Hall at 601 4th Ave E, Olympia WA; or provided by phone by calling CDBG Program Specialist Anastasia Everett at 360-753-8277,” the city said.

The comment period began yesterday and will end on Friday, April 14.

There will also be public hearings on the two drafts during the Olympia City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 28 and at a Thurston County Public Hearing set for Tuesday, April 18.
