Olympia City Council honors Councilmember Renata Rollins

Olympia City Council and staff honored outgoing Councilmember Renata Rollins for her contributions to the city, especially in her advocacy of providing better living conditions for the underrepresented members of the community.

At the council’s last meeting on Tue., Dec. 14, Olympia Councilmember Dani Madrone recognized that Rollins had elevated the voices of the marginalized and underrepresented members of the community.

Former City Manager Steve Hall also shared how Rollins’ unique perspective helped change the council’s priorities. “When you first came to the city council, I thought maybe you are a city manager’s worst nightmare. We didn’t talk the same language, we didn’t have the same priorities.” He explained that eventually, he was able to understand where Rollins was coming from, “your perspective with the world is different for a reason.”

Councilmember Clark Gilman added, “I am so glad that we were on the same journey together.” He continued, “I came to understand that we are all beloved, worthy of love in this community, and we are all humans worthy of shelter.”

Incoming Councilmember Dontae Payne also shared, “there’s something about you that recognizes the importance of representation in government.”

Rollins began her career with the city council in 2017. She had served as Chair of the General Government Committee and through her efforts, facilitated in the hiring of the city’s police auditor, provide advisory stipends, became one of the leading voices in the development of the city’s use-of-force policies, as well as establishing the new Social Justice and Equity Commission.

Rollins is set to move to Spokane, Washington following her retirement from the council.

Did they honor her for stealing during her tenure? Guess we forgot all about that...
