Olympia Chorus seeking singers

Posted

The chords are ringing in the Washington Capitol, as the Olympia Chorus prepares to celebrate 60 years of singing!

This women’s a capella group is holding tryouts on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Whether you can read sheet music or not, whether you sing every day or want to reconnect with an activity you enjoy, you are welcome in this learning-based group.

Interested singers should contact Director Margaret Eby, 360-791-5493, to schedule a time on Jan. 28 to try out.

Rehearsals are on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1515 Harrison Ave, Olympia, WA, 98501.

“The chorus is all about supporting each singer to do their best,” Margaret said.

The group sings barbershop-style harmony, memorizing their music so performances can be dynamic and exciting. Emphasis is on learning, with each member always aiming to improve.

“Even women who’ve been singing for decades take lessons,” noted Jan Smallwoo, team leader for the chorus.

The Olympia Chorus is a part of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), a worldwide, nonprofit organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, performance and competition.

All choruses in SAI are organized by region; Olympia Chorus is part of North by Northwest Region 13 along with more than 20 others from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

“Normally, we’d be preparing for the annual Sweet Adelines convention in May,” said Julia Pinnix, Events Coordinator. “But this year is our 60th anniversary. So we’re celebrating with our community instead.”

Watch for performance announcements.

The Olympia Chorus is a women’s a cappella chorus dedicated to sharing the style of barbershop music, and enriching our community through performance, music education and service. For more information, visit https://olympiasweetadelines.org/.
