No layberth ships at our port, please

Posted

Dear Editor:

Halloween is coming and the Port of Olympia has a scary surprise. Port Commissioners want to berth two 50-year-old 700 foot ships for five years near downtown Olympia. This is a Halloween trick or treat from the Port for 2020.

The problem is that the nightmare will not go away for five years. There are serious questions about these old ships. There has been extensive hull damage to one ship. The channel may not be deep enough to move these ships. The Port can be liable for any needed dredging, oil spill cleanups and additional security. City residents have not been consulted and are in for a scary 5 years.

Some commissioners claim that they do not need to ask you, but boaters and residents demand a public hearing to review this decision. We do not want Halloween to be this scary because of tricks and old ships.
