New West Olympia Timberland Library branch to open June 1

Posted

The many-years wait by west Olympia residents will be over two weeks from tomorrow, when Olympia Timberland Library opens a new branch inside of Capital Mall.

The new branch will open on Tue., June 1 -- quietly, of course. A grand-opening celebration is planned but not scheduled yet, according to Cheryl Heywood, executive director of the five-county Timberland Regional Library.

The 3,000 square-foot library, still under construction, is technically a branch of a branch.  Olympia Timberland Library manager Stephanie Hope-Cochran will also lead the staff at the new West Olympia branch, some of whom will work at both facilities.  Compared with the downtown library with its 19,000 square feet, this one's a mini-branch.

One innovation of this new facility will be its hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  •  Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nearby libraries in Lacey and Tumwater are closed on Mondays.  They and Olympia close at 6 p.m. All are closed Sundays.

Other promised innovations include multi-media "Vox" books, two-in-one audio and print books designed to help young children with literacy development and Launchpad tablets preloaded with entertaining and educational content for kids.  Computers, printing services and free wi-fi will be available for patrons, too.
