New renter protections on the agenda today for Olympia’s land use and environment committee

Olympia’s Land Use and Environment committee meets today and will consider adding new protection for renters to the city's Municipal Code. 

The proposed renter protection ordinance would prohibit landlords, property owners and property managers from aggressively pursuing the collection of overdue rent during the COVID-19 state of emergency unless the aforementioned landlord could prove in court that s/he offered the tenant a reasonable repayment plan.

If passed, this ordinance would last as long as the public health emergency posed by COVID-19 in the state of Washington, as defined by Governor Inslee’s emergency proclamation 20-05 and its extensions. That proclamation has been in force since Feb. 20 of this year.
