Many activities for seniors in Thurston County

Fall activities abound for the senior population. Here's what's going on in our local senior centers throughout the county.

YELM

Yelm Senior Center:   Haunted Scavenger Hunt and Halloween Decoration Contest

This event will take place outside the Yelm Senior Center. They are inviting the public to create an exhibit. It will be as great as your imagination! You will need to supply a riddle that applies to your creation. The center will compile the riddles and hand out for attendees.

Decorations must be setup outside the YSC on Oct 30th by 10:00 am with takedown prior to November 2nd. YSC will take ownership of decorations not removed.

Bring your decorated Jack-o-lanterns:

Prizes will be awarded for:

  • Best Adult
  • Best Child
  • Most Original
  • Scariest
  • "People's Choice" will decide Best of Show.

Hunt donations will be accepted. All proceeds will help support the Yelm Senior Center.  Entry forms are available on their website  or at the Yelm Senior Center, located at 16530 103rd St., Yelm

The Yelm Senior Center is open Tuesday through Friday 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. Congregate meals provided by Senior Services for South Sound, will be served on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday, 11:30 am - Noon.

Masks and proof of vaccinations are not required.

TENINO

Quarry House Tenino: 

In Tenino, Senior Services for South Sound provides a warm, nutritious meal at the Quarry House every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  The suggested donation for each meal (if the diner is age 60 or over) is $3-$6.  If under 60, the cost of each meal is $6.40.  Dining is open to the public.

The Quarry House is also used by the Tenino Lions Club and the South Thurston Historical Society for their regular meetings.  The city itself uses the Quarry House to sponsor local and regional training.  When not in use by any of the above activities, the Quarry House is available to rent on a first come, first served, basis. TUMWATER 

Tumwater's Old Town Center

The Old Town Center (OTC) is a community resource center, offering a wide range of FREE and low-cost programs/activities to area seniors.  For questions regarding days and hours open during the COVID Pandemic at the Old Town Center, call Todd Anderson: (360) 754-4164.

Activities (free unless otherwise noted)

Pinochle

Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. for pinochle in the lunch room. There is always somebody looking for a game. 

Senior "Jam"

Do you like old time tunes and bluegrass music?  Every Tuesday from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the multi-purpose room, you'll find a group of like-minded folks ready to sing and play. 

Bingo

Second Wednesday of each month at 12:15 p.m. in the lunch room. Prizes donated by the OTC Senior Council.

Arts & Crafts Group

Every Wednesday and Thursday, 9 - 11:30 a.m. in the multi-purpose room. Please bring your own supplies. Call Todd Anderson at (360) 754-4164 for more information.

Bridge

Every Thursday is bridge day!  Join us to play this exciting game in the lunch room after lunch, 12 - 2:30 p.m. 

Lunch

Monday - Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Cost is $5 per day or $50 for a 10-meal ticket. Menus include a variety of meals (soups, casseroles, fruits and salads). No reservations necessary.

Food Bank

The Thurston County Food Bank will visit the OTC on the 2nd Friday of each month at 12 p.m., to drop off already-prepared bags of food. To be eligible for this FREE program you will need to complete an Intake Form (available in the lunch room). Contact Todd Anderson at (360) 754-4164 for further information.

LACEY

The Best Rummage Sale on Earth!

If you can't find it here, you can't find it anywhere! Bring family and friends to The Best Rummage Sale on Earth on Saturday, November 13, 2021, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Lacey Senior Center.  Why pay retail?  Come save money and support our seniors by shopping at this popular fundraiser for Senior Services for South Sound. Proceeds benefit the Activities Department

Donations Needed! 

Now's the time to start looking at all those "things" that no longer serve you and are taking up space! Some of the things we are looking for include tools, household items, sporting goods, clothing, shoes, jewelry, accessories, textiles, bedding, kitchenware, China, crafts, works of art, antiques, collectibles, garden equipment, decorations, books, CDs and albums.

They accept only clean items in good shape that aren't broken including flat screen monitors, televisions, small furniture; no computers.

If you wish to donate items for this event, please take them to their sponsor, Olympic Moving & Storage, 935 Poplar St, Olympia, starting November 1, 2021, 1 – 4 p.m.

If you have something sizable, please contact Jill at 360-407-3967 in advance to see if it can be donated.

Early Bird Entry: 8 a.m. – free to members; $5 public

Free Entry: 9 a.m.

The Virgil Clarkson Lacey Senior Center is located at 6757 Pacific Ave. SE in Lacey and  is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 am to 4 p.m. Lunch is served on those days from 11:30 – 12:15. You must show proof of vaccination over two weeks prior and masks are required to attend functions. For more information contact them at their website

OLYMPIA

The Olympia Senior Center is located at 222 Columbia St. NW Olympia and is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Lunch is served on those days.

Masks are required. They also offer many classes online via ZOOM. For more information go to their website by clicking here.
