Lacey to save on waste

City plans to abandon lift station to accommodate a new wastewater line

The Lacey City Council approved a plan to abandon its Lift Station 20 to accommodate the construction of a wastewater line.

During the general council meeting on Thursday, July 1, the council members introduced a motion to abandon the lift station located near the Rainier Vista Park. Generally, a lift station is a facility which pumps out wastewater and helps the water move to a higher area.

In a presentation by Lacey Public Works Director Scott Egger, he explained that the recent developments in Summerwalk allow them to eliminate the lift station and install a new sewer pipe.

He also assured that closing down one lift station will not bring any inconvenience to the public since there are approximately 40 lift stations in the city. On the contrary, Egger claimed that abandoning one lift station will help the city to save over $100,000.

On the other hand, the city council approved to award the bid for the construction of the wastewater line to Northwest Cascade, Inc. for $513,140.70. The project will begin in late August or early September and take approximately 30 working days.

The contract with Northwest Cascade is to install 1,000 linear feet of eight-inch diameter sewer and will run along 47th Ave SE to Parkside Drive SE.

In addition, the construction includes services such as cleanouts, transfer of sewer services, connections to existing sewer systems, and main abandonments. The contract also covers pavement and lawn restoration work.
