Lacey names city’s first poet laureate, sets February as ‘Lacey Loves to Read Month’

The City of Lacey appointed its former deputy mayor, Cynthia Pratt, as its first-ever poet laureate during the council meeting on Thu., Jan. 20.

A founding member of Olympia Poetry Network, Pratt’s poems have appeared in various publications, including Crab Creek Review, Steelhead Special, Raven Chronicles, and Bellingham Review.

Mayor Andy Ryder said Pratt is invited to share poetry with the council every April to promote National Poetry Month.

“I encourage all community members to embrace the art of poetry and invite the Poet Laureate to share poetry with the City Council once a year,” Ryder said.

Pratt ended 12-years of service on the city council in December 2021.

February is ‘Lacey Loves to Read Month’

During the same meeting, the Lacey City Council declared the month of February this year as “Lacey Loves to Read Month” in a bid to increase tolerance and unity within the community through reading literature that explores diversity and social issues.

As part of the 19th year continuation of the program, award-winning author Brandon Mull will personally visit the city on Feb. 17 to engage the community in reading and discussing his works.

Winners of the recently held Lacey Loves to Read Bookmark contest will have a front-row seat during the book signing activity with Mull,  a New York Times best-selling author.

The program is a partnership between Lacey, North Thurston Public Schools and the Lacey Timberland Regional Library.
