The Lacey City Council approved the recommendation of the city’s Commission on Equity to fly the Juneteenth Flag at City Hall this weekend from June 18 to19.
The council also discussed the activities for the Juneteenth celebration during its Thursday, June 9 work session,.
There will be a free barbecue lunch and free haircuts for residents who attend the Juneteenth celebration as well as various forms of entertainment and games.
Lacey Assistant City Manager Shannon Kelley-Fong explained to the council that the city partnered with the Fred U. Harris Masonic Lodge of Prince Hall Masons for the event scheduled on Saturday, June 18, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Regional Athletic Complex.
Kelley-Fong clarified that the city worked as a “collaborator” with the City of Tumwater and the Fred U. Harris Masonic Lodge to organize the event.
“The city (worked) as a collaborator, so it is not us coming in and creating a new event, but really working with a very successful community to make it more successful moving forward,” said Kelley-Fong.
Lacey provided additional communication platforms to spread the invitation for the event. Kelley-Fong added that the City would also provide additional help in terms of logistics on the day of the event.
The city council is set to formalize the Juneteeth Proclamation at the June 16 Council Meeting.
Juneteenth celebrations commemorate the date in 1865, June 19,when U.S. federal troops arrived in Galveston to ensure that the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation was enforced. New traditions about the Juneteenth freedom-from-slavery celebration include community events such as parades, cookouts, prayer gatherings, musical performances, and historical-cultural readings.
