The Lacey City Council is urging students and parents to walk and cycle to school instead of driving private vehicles to promote the safety and health of children.
During its regular meeting last Thursday, October 6, the Lacey City Council proclaimed October Walk-to-School Month, promising to add more bike lanes, trails, and sidewalks and improve street crossings to provide safer school routes.
“Making bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements a priority can help protect the life and safety of Lacey’s youth,” the proclamation read.
Intercity Transit's Walk N Roll Program Supervisor Kerri Wilson thanked the council for the proclamation, saying that opting to walk and cycle would help improve air quality around schools.
“It also helps students to practice pedestrian safety skills and to build some physical activities into their day,” said Wilson.
Mayor Andy Ryder expressed his excitement about the upcoming events that the partner schools will organize in line with the proclamation.
“This is always a fun time to walk with students,” said Ryder. “Hopefully, we can get more kids walking safely to school.”

For anyone considering participating, BE SAFE and BE AWARE. These areas are increasingly becoming unsafe for people as we've seen with the Winco shooting, more than several robberies, drug dealers and gangbangers, homeless tweakers and general uncleanliness. Kids especially smaller ones are prime targets for robberies and hell even getting hit by a car walking down the road because there isn't a sidewalk or something of the sort.

Darn right! When I was a kid, I had to walk to and from school - 6 miles away - in the snow and ice without shoes!
