How to be cool this weekend -- and support nonprofit programs here

Posted

The other day I met someone who was in the process of moving to Texas from here. I am a bit ashamed of myself because I involuntarily asked them in a more accusatory manner than intended “why would you want to live there?”

They explained they liked the heat (even 105) and they had family there and no reason to stay here. That’s fair, we moved here for similar reasons. I think I have already adapted to the PNW because even this heat wave is zapping me – so I have tried to limit most of this week’s nonprofit posts to indoor activities! Remember, stay cool, drink water and keep an eye on your animals, and review this information on heatstroke from the American Animal Hospital Association. Animals do not adapt as well as we do to hot days!

Cool down with a festival of fun for kids and adults

Summer Splash at Hands On Children’s Museum

Experience a new adventure every day at the Summer Splash! Festival of Fun now until September 5 at the Hands on Children’s Museum.

Enjoy special events like:

  • The Fire Rescue Spectacular where kids can explore Olympia’s fleet of emergency vehicles
  • meet Sparky the Fire Dog,
  • take the Junior Fire Fighter Challenge, and
  • enjoy free ice cream.

Click here for a full list of daily activities. Note: online reservations required.

The Master Gardener Foundation’s Plant Sale

This continues throughout the summer on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month from 10-1. While they will not be selling vegetable starts, fruit trees, or flower baskets this year, the good news is that reservations are not needed and there are no limits on plant purchases!

The July discount is 50% off all conifers, including native conifers as well as Norway, Red Mountain, and Japanese Maples. In addition, they will have Tough Totes in fun bright colors in the 11- and 7-gallon sizes, collapsible lawn bags, Hori Hori’s, small tools sharpening and much more.

Best of all, Master Gardener volunteers will be available to answer your gardening questions, assist with plant selections, and share planting advice. Click here for more details.

Great Olympia Bike Rodeo

Enjoy some summer fun as well as learn some bike safety at the Great Olympia Bike Rodeo on Saturday, July 30 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at Isthmus Park. There will be free bike helmets for children (while supplies last), bike safety education, bike skills course and a pop-up traffic garden.

The Bike Rodeo is made possible by a partnership between Safe Kids Thurston County, Intercity Transit’s Walk N Roll Program, Olympia Parks, Olympia Police and Thurston Traffic Zero. The event is generously funded by the WA TBI Council. Click here for more details.

Cool down with shows in Tenino and Olympia

'You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown'

The Tenino Young-At-Heart Theatre is performing “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” through July 30 at Tenino High School. According to their website, the 1967 musical is based on the Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz.

Charlie Brown and the entire Peanuts gang explore life’s great questions as they play baseball, struggle with homework, sing songs, swoon over their crushes, and celebrate the joy of friendship.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 27 is a “pay what you can night,” with donations going to the Tenino Boys and Girls Club. Otherwise, tickets are $13 for students and seniors, and $15 for general admission. Click here for specific dates, times and details.

'Life is Complicated'

Olympia Little Theatre’s new play, “Life is Complicated” is a romantic comedy with a twist! Shows run at 7:25 pm starting Friday, July 29. Other shows are on Saturday, July 30, and Sunday, July 31 at 1:55 pm.

Founded in 1939, Olympia Little Theatre (OLT) is the oldest live theater in Olympia and one of the oldest in Washington State. Click here for tickets and more details.

Feel Cool About Helping Children in Ukraine or Those Closer to Home

On Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., the Olympia Art League will host an art card sale benefitting Ukrainian Refugee Children at the Thurston County Fair in the Fair Arts Building.

Their artists created the cards. All proceeds will go to UNICEF for refugee children from Ukraine. Click here for more details.

Feel Cool about helping those closer to home

Also on Saturday, July 30, Cozy Events will be holding a semi-formal event benefitting Joyful Hands Ministries. For 11 years every Saturday, Joyful Hands Ministries provides breakfast and a prayer to anyone who needs it at the corner of State and Franklin.

Saturday’s fundraising event will be held at the Olympia Center.

Doors open at 6:45 pm and tickets will be $50 per person at the door. The event includes ballroom dancing with live music from Black Satin, dessert, and a silent auction.
