The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an advisory today warning residents of an expected heat wave this coming Saturday through Monday, June 25 to 27.
NWS expects the first heat wave of the year to happen from Saturday noon to Monday, 11 p.m. in portions of northwest and west-central Washington, with temperatures ranging in the mid to upper 80s on Saturday to the low 90s on Sunday and Monday.
“This level of heat will pose a moderate risk of heat-related illness to heat-sensitive people and pets,” NWS warned in its advisory. “Given the recent cool weather, there has been little opportunity to acclimate to warm temperatures.”
The weather service also advised residents of the following:
“Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances,” it added.
NWS advised residents to take extra care when working or spending time outdoors, schedule strenuous activities for early mornings or evenings and wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothes. Citing the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, they recommended frequent breaks in shaded or airconditioned environments during outdoor work.
“Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location,” the weather service advised. “Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.”
According to its statement, temperatures will only go down to the low 60s on Saturday and Sunday nights in many locations.
NWS also cautioned against activities in rivers, saying that waters that run high because of the cool and wet spring with 40 to 50-degree temperatures may contribute significantly to cold and high water-related incidents.
According to the report, cold water shock and hypothermia can quickly result in death during early season heat events.
“Use extreme caution if recreating near water, wear a life jacket, and keep a close eye on children.”
