The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Olympia inched up in the penultimate week of January, as did prices across the Evergreen State.
The average price rose to $3.922 per gallon this week from $3.904 per gallon last week, according to data from AAA Washington on Thursday, Jan. 23. One month earlier, the average price for regular unleaded was $3.857 per gallon.
The record average price for regular gas in Olympia stands at $5.571, which was set on June 13, 2022, according to AAA Washington data.
Mid-grade, premium and diesel gas prices were all firmly above $4 per gallon on Thursday, with diesel posting the highest average at $4.538 per gallon.
The price of gas in Olympia stacks up with most other areas of the state, where the overall average for regular unleaded gas stood at $3.939 per gallon on Thursday. That was about 3 cents from the previous week.
The highest average price for regular gas was $4.16 per gallon in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett region on Thursday. The lowest average price was $3.312 per gallon in Clarkson near the Washington and Idaho border.
Nationally, the average price of regular unleaded gas weighed in at $3.135 per gallon on Thursday, which was up about 3 cents in the last week.
The most expensive state in the country for gas was Hawaii at $4.549 per gallon, followed by California at $4.447 per gallon and the state of Washington.
“The culprit for the pop in prices was likely old man winter,” said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross in a statement on Thursday. “It’s a little harder to distribute gasoline in bad weather, and refineries don’t operate well in freezing temperatures either.”
