Gas prices on the upswing in Olympia

Posted

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Olympia inched up in the penultimate week of January, as did prices across the Evergreen State.

The average price rose to $3.922 per gallon this week from $3.904 per gallon last week, according to data from AAA Washington on Thursday, Jan. 23. One month earlier, the average price for regular unleaded was $3.857 per gallon.

The record average price for regular gas in Olympia stands at $5.571, which was set on June 13, 2022, according to AAA Washington data.

Mid-grade, premium and diesel gas prices were all firmly above $4 per gallon on Thursday, with diesel posting the highest average at $4.538 per gallon.

The price of gas in Olympia stacks up with most other areas of the state, where the overall average for regular unleaded gas stood at $3.939 per gallon on Thursday. That was about 3 cents from the previous week.

The highest average price for regular gas was $4.16 per gallon in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett region on Thursday. The lowest average price was $3.312 per gallon in Clarkson near the Washington and Idaho border.

Nationally, the average price of regular unleaded gas weighed in at $3.135 per gallon on Thursday, which was up about 3 cents in the last week.

The most expensive state in the country for gas was Hawaii at $4.549 per gallon, followed by California at $4.447 per gallon and the state of Washington.

“The culprit for the pop in prices was likely old man winter,” said AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross in a statement on Thursday. “It’s a little harder to distribute gasoline in bad weather, and refineries don’t operate well in freezing temperatures either.”
