An allegedly intoxicated woman driving 25 mph in a 35 mph zone, with her car’s right turn blinker on, aroused enough suspicion on the part of a Tumwater police officer to be pulled over for driving under the influence, on Thursday, August 5 at about 4:30 a.m.

According to the police report, Karina Cobena, 34, of Tumwater, smelled of intoxicating substances, her eyes bloodshot, watery and glassy, yet she denied drinking at all while “fumbling” to retrieve her drivers license, continuing to search for the license even after she handed it to TPD.

Cobena at first declined to perform a standard field sobriety test, stating that she did not feel comfortable, but still agreed to take the test.

All tests were explained multiple times by TPD and demonstrated for Cobena until she stated that she understood the test.

Cobena failed poorly on the tests and, at first, refused to provide a voluntary breath sample. After being observed by a Tumwater officer for 15 minutes she agreed to provide a breath sample but was unable to do so.

Police applied for a blood search warrant, received it and transported Cobena to Capital Medical Center for blood draws.

Cobena was issued a criminal traffic citation for driving under the influence, and had no prior convictions for driving under the influence. Cobena was transported to her home, released on the promise that she would attend her mandatory court hearing.
