Mohamed “Mr. Mo” El-Sokkary, Family Liaison at Garfield and Lincoln Elementary schools, was named the 2025 Olympia School District (OSD) Classified School Employee of the Year (CSEY).
CSEY is a prestigious award that recognizes employees who demonstrate outstanding work performance, professional leadership and collaboration.
El-Sokkary received the award via a surprise announcement at Lincoln Elementary's weekly school assembly on Dec. 14, at which time Superintendent Patrick Murphy shared the news.
“In his nomination, Principals Marcela Abadi (Lincoln) and Brendon Chertok (Garfield) praised his exceptional commitment to creating an environment where everyone can succeed. His care, compassion, and tireless effort to support those around him are truly unmatched,” stated the district in a social media post.
El-Sokkary has served the district for more than 19 years as a paraeducator, teacher and family liaison. He has worked at Avanti High School, Jefferson Middle School, Olympia High School and Student Support.
Chertok lauded El-Sokkary.
"His work has given voice to those who have historically been underrepresented in our system and community. Because of his dedication to removing barriers and creating access points for students and families, our community is stronger and better able to respond to critical issues that arise in our work," he said.
A school board recognition ceremony before a regular meeting on Jan. 9, 2025, is scheduled to honor El-Sokkary.

The CSEY is an annual statewide awards program through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Local nominations are first collected from school districts throughout Washington state. The nominated individuals then are considered to be named a Regional Classified School Employee of the Year, which allows them to advance to the state competition.
“The annual award recognizes employees who have made a positive difference in their profession. A screening committee of OSD employees reviewed the nominations before selecting the honorees,” a news release stated.
The State Superintendent of Public Instruction recognizes the regional finalists in the running for the state CSEY, to be recognized at an annual spring award ceremony.
